A Deeper Look at an Introduction

  • Intro
    • I will introduce my poem "Introduction to Poetry" and the author, Billy Collins.
    • My claim/thesis right now is "Introduction to Poetry could be interpreted as a poem about poetry's basic fundamentals, however there is evidence within and outside the text that Collins wrote this poem to encourage readers to look, listen, and understand poetry in more imaginative ways".
    • I am pretty confident in my claim, however, I am not sure if I worded it in a way that makes sense.
    • I think Collins' deeper meaning of this poem is really impactful, especially as a student.
  • Section #1
    • I will start this section with a basic analysis/interpretation of the poem. Basically how a person would read the poem just to read it, or just scratch the surface of it as Collins talks about in his poem.
    • I plan on challenging this interpretation with there being a deeper, underlying message that Collins wants readers to understand.
    • There is both a literal and symbolic meaning to the writing.
  • Section #2
    • This section I will start by restating or referring back to my thesis to make sure it is clear what my claim is.
    • I will provide textual evidence that the poem has a deeper meaning than what meets the eye.
      • The use of "them", "they", and "I"
  • Section #3
    • Again I will start by restating my thesis, but not quite as much as I did in section 2.
    • I will provide evidence outside of the text that supports a deeper meaning to Collins' poem.
      • Collins' life
      • Critic's analysis of the poem

  1. I love how thorough your analysis will be. It is a different direction than I am taking, but that is a good thing! My only comment is that your thesis seems kind of obvious, that you are showing something the audience may already know. Perhaps give an example or two of your findings to let people know how your point of view is unique.

  2. I think that you have a very solid argument going there. I agree with Josh, that maybe you would want to put a new spin on it?
