Analysis of a Snippet of Hamlet

In this production of Hamlet, there were some specific acting decisions which darkened the tone of the play. During Hamlet's soliloquy, there are moments where the actor alludes to suicide as he either subtly chokes (0:27) or hangs himself (2:42). The decision to include these movements grab the audience's attention and reiterates the drama, despair, and serious nature of the scene.

  1. First of all, Benedict Cumberbatch is life. But in reference to the scene itself, I agree that the dark acting cues made the scene darker. I also think that the dark lighting and the fact that we can see only black makes the scene only darker.

  2. I love that we used the same video, but pulled completely different things from it. I agree that the darkness used in the scene creates a dramatic atmosphere.
